Daffodil Day has been eventful - sheer joy :) Though there were skeptics ("So... how much of this goes into research? How can I know it will?), donors were generally very generous - with their heart that is. Students, to put generousity in context, contributed a fair amount. Nadee joked that Arts students were the most generous, and Medical, the least. As indicated from our however unrepresentative samples of observation that day + assumptions (e.g. Students in the Brownless Medical Library are medical students), no offence lol.

Had a good catch-up dinner with the girls at Oriental Spoon, always a pleasure to exchange stories! Top it with yummy food!

On another note, I'm going to Adelaide with Sara during Spring break! We'll meet in Adelaide airport - Sara from Queensland and me from Victoria. Talk about geographical compromise lol.

Just got back from tutoring, joy again albeit my embarrassing attempt with Quadratics. Must say my math knowledge has deteriorated in uni.

Anyway tonight was a very special night. Will, Juliany and I went for a Toastmasters evening at a restaurant bar.

It was really interesting how it was a structured night, with agendas such as business talk, table topics, prepared speeches, evaluation and not to forget, good food (chicken parma for me) and red wine! I was impressed with the confidence exuded from the speakers and how eloquently they gave an impromptu speech about a topic as random as Take Away Food.

What really strucked me was the formalities during the evening. For instance, before a member express his/her opinion, he/she would stand up and say to the Chairman, "Your Honour Mr. Chairman, may I suggest that we are tight on the time and move on from the motions tonight?". And how when each toastmasters passed on the MC role, they would first shake hands . And not to forget, an award ceremony at the end of every toastmaster sessions where the best Table Topic, Speech and Evaluater are presented with an award, according to the votes that night. Nonetheless, formalities aside, the mood of the evening was really light-hearted and filled with a good sense of Aussie humour.

Definitely picked up some good tips on public speaking and will want to join more toastmasters sessions!

Hey everyone!

Sorry for not updating whilst in Shanghai, blogger/facebook and pretty much most Western social medias are blocked in China!

Shanghai Industry Project, in a nutshell, has been an awesome experience.

The culture, people, gettin' around with the most efficient Metro system, working in a creative ad agency, getting a hang of how "guan xi" works in China, tasty xiao long paos, being all touristy, doing the "Asian squat", experiencing the hustle and bustle of the city that never ever sleeps etc etc and WORLD EXPO - memorable experience, one wonders why all you get from others are complaints. & Most importantly, getting to know, work, live, laugh and explore a foreign land with a diverse, fun-loving, caring, adventurous amazing group of people from Uni in Shanghai.

On another note,

Shanghai - is no doubt a future workplace for those looking into banking. It's rapidly developing into an international financial hub, but not with Hong Kong being in the lead for the time being. But one day it shall be. Ten years?

Oh dear, this post doesn't do the experience any justice at all, does it?

But seriously, where should I start?

A soldier

Today after dinner with Jian and Jer,

I took the train home and was waiting for the bus

when an unkempt man, in his sixties

approached me for the time of the next bus..

Talking to him further wasn't my initial intention.

Turned out that he is a half-Portugese born in Shanghai

enlisted in the British Army

and positioned in Malaya in the 60's


He said

he used to think he's got what it takes to face the world

the bold air of confidence

not unusual in bloods of the young

but his experience in the army humbled him

for life's not to be taken granted for

and that he's very, very lucky

compared to his comrades in India.



He said that

he had learnt 3 things:

Be Kind

Respect Others &

Never Give Up - for dreams do come true.

A brief encounter

nevertheless a meaningful one.

1st day

1st day of December, 1st day of internship.

Didn't get to audit the industry I was targeting, but I guess any experience will be worthwhile.

"The contract states that your work officially ends at 5.30 pm. But if you're expected to leave by 7pm, I say that your seniors are being very kind to you."

hahaha~ okay so that's what is in store for us. Bring it on!

Enthusiasm is still in the air, love the whole commuting-by-LRT-to-work experience, makes me feel like one part of the real work force. hahah but everybody is saying they'll see how long this spirit of mine will last. hahah fine, it's hard to tell, but it's a good start no?


Life goes on after exams, hopefully I will know what I want better after this internship!

Mission impossible made possible

Ahh although I’m having an excruciating headache at the moment thanks to almost 15 hours of non-stop action today, I really want to write about these two amazing days and the awesome people involved!

Warning: Long wordy, picture-less post ahead!

Tuesday

1. Done with Cost Management, went to Ming Chin’s ‘surprise’ birthday luncheon at Corretto’s with the bunch (‘surprise’ because apparently I made it a ‘non-surprise’ =S, again darn!).
2. Went home after day due to splitting headache and slept for 3 hours. Continued with some left over hand-washes, had dinner and at 8.30 pm, off I went to visit Anne and Elwin, who stay just 10 minutes away.
3. Spent almost 2 hours with them, amazing how time passed so quickly when you’re with such warm company. We talked about their past in Wales, how they moved and adapted here and even how they met each other way back in the 60’s =) Not forgetting Adventure Destination Lesson No. 1 – St. Petersburg’s, where they toured last August (along with 6 other countries); Elwin gave a pretty detail account about its history, architecture, culture etc etc etc! Left at around 10.20 pm and our plan for next year is that I visit them once a week and we’ll cover one Adventure Destination each time! (Will probably take more than 1 year to cover all 56 countries they’ve been to). Also, get well soon, Anne.
4. Got home and started cleaning + packing and of course chatting on msn! Slept at 1.30 am.

Wednesday

• 7.30 am Woke up, bathed and freshened up

• 10.20 am Reached Victoria Market and met up with Jia Yen, Andrea and Audrey. Bought cherries, peaches and nectarines. Bought some “toys” for LMT. Thanks gals!

• 12.00 pm Brought fruits back to JY’s place. Met Pei Wen, but she didn’t join us for lunch as she had a Jap test that afternoon. Ate lunch at RiceBar with the girls + MaoMao + Juliana. Had a hearty laugh over the nonsensical. =) Andrea went off for her Chinese exam and Jul & Audrey went home.

• 2.20 pm Jia Yen, Mao2 and I reached DFO, Southern Cross station. Shopping time!

• 3.45 pm Token of appreciation “ceremony” for my two models at Starbucks =)

• 4.15pm Off to Melbourne Central for more shopping (LMY’s second dress)

• 5.00 pm Rushed off to Myers by Mao2 for his turn of shopping hahaha

Aim: To use off ‘his’ Myers gift vouchers (‘his’ because source of voucher is highly questionable).

Resources: Two ladies of the day helping to serve Master Mao because he’s like a lost kid in the departmental store.

Status: Mission accomplished. Bought a Levi jeans for AUD 40 (net of voucher value). Rip-off.

• 6.00 pm Bid Jia Yen and MaoMao goodbye! Thanks for sending me off at station. Thanks so much you both for the amazing afternoon =) Couldn’t have done it without you both. (Though there is Mao2’s constant whining to put up with =p)

• Took a 6.15 pm Lilydale train down to Camberwell.

• 6. 33 pm Reached Camberwell Station.

• 6. 43 pm Reached Rivoli Village Cinema (the best in Melbourne, the grandest I’ve seen; “village” irony). Met up with Emily.

• 7.00 pm Had a quick dinner at a Asian fastfood store. Chatted about the awesomeness of being a left-handed (Emily’s left-handed too!) and her very very very inspiring one-year around the world backpacking adventure.

• 7.25 pm Went to watch Amreeka. A simple tale about a Palestinian family settling in America, while worrying about the wars and bombing in Palestine and enduring the social stigma as a foreigner, being associated with terrorism. The movie is very light-hearted actually, not as heavy as the theme would suggest. Very entertaining. Fantastic =)

• 9.20 pm Emily fetched me all the way back home!!!!!! Thanks so much =) Chatted about so many things along the way: family, career, investments, adventures etc. Journey home felt like a blink of eye.

• 9.48 pm Reached home. Emily gave me a peck on my cheek (to which, honestly I do not know how to return) and said, “You don’t do that in Malaysia, do you?” to resolve the slight awkwardness. To which I replied, “No we don’t. But we do hugs!” And we hugged goodbye. Lol. Amazing night, thanks for all the treats!

• 9.50 pm Continue packing i.e. stuffing the 9 kilo of chocolates, 1 kilo of medicine, 2 kilo of presents, 3.2 kilos of fruits (this to be collected tomorrow) and the remaining kilos are to be MINEEEEEEEEEEE (err.. 2 kilos) *roars* no taking away from me! Haha.

• 10.45 pm – 11.10pm Started and finished post.

Need to sleep soon as my day will start at 6 am tomorrow (work starts at 9 am) and will end at 6am, 24 hours later (assuming I won’t be getting sleep on Air Asia lol)!

Last night in 2009 on my Melbourne bed…. Gonna miss it too.

Emily came over with her daughter, Clara, just awhile ago, for a visit!

First they took a look around my garden, which *sigh* I'm not too proud of, and which to Emily, "gorgeous and defenitely has alot of potential". hahaha but of course credit to my bro, for doing quite a lot of gardening lately.

We then walked around the house (literally around since there isn't much to walk haha) and we settled down for a little chat in the living room.

At 12 pm we went to a cafe in Eltham to have lunch and got to know each other better =) Clara was plain adorable and Emily offered me a babysitting job, which I'd love to take on next year.

Which I pray I have time for. There're just too many enjoyable things to do with so little time.

Working, socializing (friends, I mean), you-tubing/facebooking, Business Practicum, volunteering (occassionally), tutoring (weekly), babysitting and *oh-have-I-forgotten* studying. And of course daily commuting, which makes train my second home. If only I have Hermione's time turner, then I could go back and forth times to do everything!

Although this semester has been hectic and tiring juggling time between my commitments, and there are times I fear that my studies will be affected, I'm genuinely happy. Perhaps there are times that I hope I had more time for myself, but yea, I guess it's all about time management, and going that extra bit to do things you love. Then again, next year is my final year and sensibly, I should allow more time for my studies. *oh wells* We shall see.

haha anyway back to Cost Management!

End of Semester

It's been some time..

Just submitted a final assginment yesterday and finished the semester with what I thought was the best tutorial this semester - Body Language/Non-verbal Language (Intercultural Communication). Every single student participated in the discussion, it was certainly very appealing =)

Interesting facts:

1. While we are familiar with the handshake/hug greeting, in Matavai, a formal greeting after a long separation involves "scratching each other's head and tenples with a shark's tooth, to the point of bleeding"!

2. In most cultures, direct eye contact is a sigh of listening and showing respect; in the black culture, personal eye contact is a way of indicating disapproval.

3. When someone winks at you, it probably connotes flirting, but when Nigerians wink at their children, it is signalling their children to leave the room, and in India, winking may be perceived as an insult.

4. The ''OK'' gesture we normally flash is the most obscene gesture in Latin America!

After submitting my assignment, I met up with Xia to have a belated-birthday celebration =)
Had dinner and we watched Mao's Last Dancer ! Who better to watch with than someone who grew up with the communist regime in China? hehe

Definitely an engrossing and heart-felt watch, depicting the prices you pay as you strive for your dreams =) And being courageous and mentally strong in times of uncertainty, and to stand by your unwavering faith! Not to forget the three graceful ballet pieces in the show, which indisputably, are world class performances =) Eastern version of Billy Elliot, this movie is an emminent experience to enjoy. Kudos to Li CunXin, Chi Cao and all the other awesome casts! Respect! [why did I give up Ballet?]

Had ice-cream before I headed home =)

Things happen

There I walked, towards the bus stop after work. From afar, I saw the bus reversing into a parking. The light breeze breathed on my skin and the sun was warm; my lone shadow silhouetted against its light. It was a quiet afternoon. Where was everyone?

Half a meter away from the bus stop, a crash thundered and I looked up. Facing the enormous back of the bus, I saw it colliding into the roof of the stop. As I retracted my steps, the glass within the frames of the stop shattered into pieces.

Turning back quickly, I feared the collapse of the hovering frame.

Distressed, the driver came down, his hands cupping his face, "What happened, mate?"

His rhetorical question was answered with a nonplussed look. I could hear my heart, still beating within my chest.

After he cleared up the mess (sweeping the glass pieces away from the walk path), the bus took off. At 4.23 pm right on schedule.

The ride home was filled with silence; intensified by the resonance of what happened in my mind. Maybe his too.

I said my usual thank you before getting off, aware of the hint of discomfiture, on Bill's face.

Went for a Professional Development session today with my boss and colleague, learnt a great deal about the deaf community and the challenges they face in reality. The two speakers were deaf and throughout the session, two cultures - the deaf and the non-deaf, communicated effectively via helpful interpreters, visual aids and group activites. It was a humbling experience to gain insights from a deaf's perspective and from many experienced Disability Liaison officers throughout Melbourne.


The speaker first introduced herself as an Australian, and later added that her first language was AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language). Pretty unexpected yet seemingly reasonable. Made me realized how unconsciously we take our hearings for granted.


Yet she (Stefanie) had no resentment being profoundly deaf, and considered herself lucky to be born into an "all-deaf" family. In her words, that's as good as a hearing baby born into a hearing family. She felt belonged in her own community, as the deafs too have their own culture, social norms, beliefs as well as what they call, a "deaf accent".


Will be going for the second session of this course next week! =)

Body's feeling very jelly-ish, too stretchy. Or like Jul puts it, disobeying the Hooke's Law once you go beyond the elastic limit.

Slept like a happy bear though last night :D Then again, I always do =p

And I made a new friend, Kak Nani! Thanks to her, I was less lost in the class than I otherwise would be, alone!

Weeks leading up to the break were hectic but let's skip those parts. Highlights of the past week or so:


Tuesday - Buka Puasa with Azy

Took a train to North Melbourne where Azy lives and was introduced to her housemates =) Buka-ed puasa at 6 pm and ate Finaz's signature dish - Ayam Malas (Lazy Chicken) XD. Sedap!

Then had some girly session with Azy before leaving her place at 8 pm! Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, hope you're enjoying yourself back home now! And thanks for your gift =) Can't wait to see you again!

That night led into an unforseen travel "adventure" on trains and buses due to railway tracks repair. Travelling time = 2 hours hohoho. Witnessed verbal vulgarities on the way home, resulting in grimaces and big-eyed listeners on the bus. lol. Thanks to adventure LIVE update on facebook mobile, my trip felt shorter!


Friday - Work, KFC and Peeping

After work, met Boon and we ate KFC!! I've been craving it I smell it on the train! Cravings not satisfied though, ain't as finger-licking goood as imagined.

Saturday - Sleepover

After work rushed to the bus stop only to realize that I left my handphone at home lol. Which explained my (and Chen Hao's) tardiness for Andrea's Sleepover! Sorry!

Joined Jia Yen, Pei Wen, MC and Audrey at Andrea's mini sleepover :D Her new house, located in Tarneit (along Werribee line) is gorgeous. Luxurious yet cozy home. The night was spent away watching Bewitched and The Terminal, (on her oh-my-god 50 inch plasma TV !!!) and some of them played MahJong and Chor Dai Dee :D

Sunday - Volunteering at High Vibes Music Festival, High Street Northcote

The next thing I knew, it was 7.30 am. Thanks to Andrea for fetching me to the train station to catch the 8.16 am and I left to the city to meet up with my cousin.

LEFT my handphone at Andrea's house, I seriously can't believe myself. Reached Flinders and used the public phone to call my phone and bothered Jia Yen to use my phone to sms my bro, Xia and my cousin to tell them what's happened, and to meet as scheduled. Thanks Jia Yen >.<

Met up with Peggy and we took the tram and bus to Northcote!

As her shift was from 11-2pm and mine from 2-5 pm, I roamed around myself in the morning. The weather was awesome!

All afternoon we collected donations, calling out "Gold Coin Donation for OXFAM" and I also gave out the programs for the day. Xia joined shortly and together we worked till 5.30 pm. Sheer joy :D Most people were very generous =)

After others took over our shifts, Xia and I walked around, by that time, the crowd has built up in tenfold. The ambiance was all merry and gay, with street jazz bands, staged rock bands etc. Some even danced to the music :D

Monday - Karaoke Session
Met up with Jia Yen, Andrea, Pei Wen, Mao mao, MC and Jian Hao to sing sing sing at Party World. Party World looked like a 5-star lounge and we had a whale of a time! Listening to beautiful voices, watching MVs adorned by lengzais like LeeHom, enjoying sensational lyrics, topped with good drinks + food, what's not to love? hehe

We then had dinner at Coconut House :D Yummy chicken rice!

When going home, I took the wrong train to Epping. OMG. Was engrossed in bro's friend's Archie comics (Jughead Double Digest!!!!!) when I looked out of the train and thought, hmmm Rushall? Nope, definitely not my line. >.<

Got down at Merri when it poured heavily! Waited for train back to city for 20 minutes, then stopped at Clifton Hill. Waited another 5 minutes for my ACTUAL TRAIN. haha reached home nonetheless, tq to bro who picked me up :D

Then Skyped with mum, sis and a little of dad for 2 hours. Engaging!!!! :D

Should I take up a First Aid course? It will be fully funded by St. Johns if I join them as a volunteer. Cousin sister asked if I'm interested. I definitely am but having qualms about juggling my time, though it's only min. 5 hours a month. Sounds reasonable.

Have a desire to gain exposure while I still can. Hmm.. shall decide during the break.

Long time no see! =) I see cobwebs everywhere. Sorry for the lack of updates, you were indeed putting up with a writer's block. I digress.

Today I worked for almost 7 hours, the first 2 hours spent converting reading materials to accessible format, (in this case, electronic version) in other words - Accessible Format Editing. The next 5 resulted from an inadvertent decision, an urgent booking that suddenly came up. A one-off booking as a Library Reader. My first =)

The student I worked with was a vision-impaired Arts student, double majoring in History and Anthropology. Which meant that I'd be working with materials I'm not exactly familiar with. Which inevitably, led to some embarrassing attempts to pronounce words like "suffragettes" and "bourgeois" (Boo-zwah, cool right, try saying it!) Fortunately he was very understanding and even taught me their pronunciations and meanings. =)

Facism, anti-semitism, Pacifism, Holocaust. At the end of the session, my intellectual level must have raised a bit hahahaha. XD Beguiled the long long afternoon with an appealing topic indeed =)

Nibbled Strawberry Pokky on train again. No seats. Peak time. With people around me (5 cm radius) painstakingly enduring hunger while they eyed me and drooled helplessly (fine just eyed me). It rained again and this time, I have my new umbrella and mittens all ready, whee! :D

Ah~ weekend's here. Will be going out with my cousins tomorrow :D :D :D

And for the time being, not think of what nightmare Sunday will be like with the pile of uni work waiting. T.T

Rainy days and me

Where was my good old umbrella when I needed it most?

It's been raining these days. The unbearable chilly weather entailed. which I render - a speck tainting this otherwise beautiful ambiance. Tranquility.

On another note,

1. A durable umbrella (budget: 10-20 dollars?)

2. Mittens for my cold hands (budget: 10 dollars?)

On a random note, stood in the train on my way home today. Peak time. Nibbled my Pokky's while eyeing over his head, a professional-haircut-lesson on this man's Iphone. hehe free-rider. When I finally secured a seat, I whipped out "The End of Innocence" by Moni Mohsin, and indulged in two girls' fate during the Pakistan civil war, while it poured outside. Train time equal me time =) =) =)

I like how things sort themselves out naturally. Just have to follow the flow. =)

Today I started my first day of work as an Academic Support Worker (ASW). My student (J) broke his arm and needed a note-taker for his lectures. It was a postgraduate Marketing Management lecture, with 30 students from all over the world, a very diverse class. All of them were doing their Masters.

When the class started off with everyone introducing themselves, I panicked, fumbling over what I should say. Fortunately, J introduced me to the class as his "scriber" and everyone laughed. Dad, however begs to differ, for he thinks I'm a "nurse on call". Funny names I'm getting indeed.

The 3 hours lecture was appealing, revolving around marketing philosophies in both the olden and modern days. Though I tend to forget my position in the class, having nodded a few times to the lecturer's question,"Do you agree?". And 3 hours is a tad too long for my stomach to bear. Growling.

On a random note, my dad told me a joke today.
